Guns – Control Them

We hear a lot about “thoughts and prayers” from our politicians, but see little action.  And I, for one, do not want to fear some maniac walking into my children’s school with an automatic weapon.  It’s time for action.

The 2nd amendment of the US constitution allows gun ownership in this country.  But the framers of the constitution did not foresee assault style weapons or the murders of children and people peacefully praying in their houses of worship.

The vast majority of Americans agree with common sense background checks according to a recent poll.  This is not a partisan issue.  Someone who cannot pass a background check or has a history of violence should not own a gun.  Period. We must close all loopholes and implement common sense.

Peace – The Only Sustainable Solution

The United States has been at war since the 2003 invasion of Iraq. Hundreds of thousands have died since.  U.S. taxpayers have spent over $5 trillion dollars on wars since 9/11. The results are death and an increasing global perception of the United States as an invading and occupying force.  Can you imagine spending just a fraction of that money to solve retirement, improve education or for tax relief?

The real war is our survival against the threat of climate change. We need to mobilize our economy, our research, and our citizens to combat a threat that is already upon us and is getting worse whether we admit it or not.  The United States can and must lead on this.

The time for action was decades ago.  Now it’s time to elect politicians who understand the threat and know how to solve it.  Climate delayers are worse than climate deniers.
